Chopping Wood

For our Advent reading tonight we read Genesis 22:1-14, the story of Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac.

I was struck afresh by verse 3 when it says, Abraham, “cut the wood for the burnt offering…”

Can you imagine that! I can’t help but wonder what was going through his mind as he cut each peace of wood? What tears must have filled his eyes as he prepared enough wood for the offering. How easy it would have been to think that he must have heard God wrong. How he loved Isaac so much. How God could justly take his only son yet how God would provide. Indeed, how God must provide because He would not break His covenant promise. Lord grant me a measure of this kind of faith and fear in You!

Thank you for the reminder, Jason, I needed to read that today and I’m sure God directed me here to see it.
