Lincoln on Thanksgiving and Orphans

We had a great day yesterday with friends celebrating Thanksgiving. There is much to be thankful for!

Before we feasted our host read Lincoln’s Proclamation of Thanksgiving. This part especially struck me near the end:

And I recommend to them that…they do also, with humble penitence for our national
perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those
who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the
lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and
fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal
the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be
consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace,
harmony, tranquillity and Union.

It made me think of the widows, orphans, and those suffering today because of the situation in America, both with the war and general social conditions. I also can’t but think that commending them to “His tender care” is a reminder to the church that we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ that will express that “tender care.” How are we doing?
