John records that “many more believed because of his word” (John 4:41).
I am struck by how clearly this emphasizes the fact that their belief came because of Jesus’ verbal word. This is further shown in the next verse -
They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.” John 4:41-42.
“We have heard…and we know.”
The connection between hearing and knowing is key to understanding the nature of how we come by God’s grace to belief in Christ.
