Elective 2: Gripping Fears - David Powlison

Powlison read a testimony of a seminary student who battled panic attacks. He wanted us to get a feel for what the issue of panic, fear, and anxiety can be like for someone. This issue is very devastating and difficult.

I was deeply struck by the complexity of the issue as well as the great simplicity and hope we have in the Gospel.

Powlison is someone who you have to listen too carefully because he drops incredible bits of wisdom casually throughout. There is much I could write here but I had to take notes by pen as my laptop battery died and there was no outlet in sight.

Three key quotes:

“Our fears reveal to us what we do not want, which then enables us to see what we really want. It is when we see what we really want that we can begin to identify the idols in our life. The good things that have become ultimate things.”

“God doesn’t say meditate on the sovereignty of God and chill out. He calls us to talk to Him, to have a relationship.”

“Love is a holy anxiety for the welfare of others.”
