Thoughts from Sunday

Brent Detweiler preached this past Sunday on 1 Cor 10:23-11:1.

He laid out three questions to help in making wise-God-honoring decisions as disciples of Christ in this world:

  1. Is it Biblically prohibited?
  2. Is it permissible?
  3. Is it profitable? Will it draw my heart and others closer to Jesus?

I was challenged to search my heart and motives in many of the non-prohibited, permissible activities of my life like blogging. Am I doing it do glorify and serve only myself? Does it benefit my heart? Does it serve others? Is this the best use of my time? This is so applicable not only to blogging but to what I watch on TV or whether I watch TV, what I read, what look at online, what I do with my children.

I think at this point my motives are good and the result of my blogging stirs my own soul to love Christ more, and I hope in some small measure it does the same for those who read it. This sermon served as a good check for me - a reminder that good and permissible things can subtly crowd out the profitable things and eventually become harmful things.
