Coffee Confessions

We have switched back to Starbucks Breakfast Blend. After a year and half of ALDI’s brand coffee I made a pot the other day and it was as awful as I would have imagined $1.99-a-pound coffee being. All I can say is it was God’s grace for the past year that enabled us to actually enoy our cheap coffee.

On this topic, I have been going to the local Starbucks more than I have in awhile for business. I enjoy the atmosphere, and the coffee. Though if I were to rank coffeehouses I would say:

#1) Dilworth Coffee - a Charlotte native, great coffee and free wireless internet, my new satelite office
#2) Dunn Bros - close second, many, many sweet memories at my office away from home in Minneapolis (too bad they don’t have any Dbros here)
#3) Starbucks - good coffee, good atmosphere, great for dates, fun locations (East Blvd in Charlotte is a fav!)
#4) Caribou - for the atmosphere and the coffee, reminds me of many sweet times in Minneapolis; I go here when I want to cozy up to a good book by the fire in an quasi-Alaskan cabin in the middle of the city.

So here’s a question for you - what is your favorite daily coffee? And, what is your coffee house of choice?

    I would say:
    1. Prado - Commercial Drive (Vancouver) free wireless, very quiet, and lots of mac users like me
    2. Soma - Main street (Vancouver), free wireless, art community, more mac users, more bustle and people seem to be actually working
    3. Libby’s - South part of commercial Drive (Vancouver) - free wireless, couches, food, a good expereince all together.

As long as it has fair trade orgnaic coffee, and free wireless…im sold!

I LOVE a good cup of coffee. Right now we are drinking Cafe Yngas. It’s coffee from Bolivia and the profits go to leadership and development projects within Bolivia and a portion goes directly to Scotty and Lisa. They are selling it to raise support for their trip back to Bolivia in September.

As far as coffee houses go:

    1. Jitterz - mainly because it is usually never crowded and I can go and get some good time in the Word in. Their coffee is good and the owners are Christians.

    2. Starbucks - because, well, it’s Starbucks! :)
    3. Caribou - love the atmosphere and the coffee is good.

Miss you guys and would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get together sometime soon!!

Oh no….Caribou is WAY better than Starbucks!!! : ) Come on, TJ!!! Pandora’s Box is like drinking a box of cigarettes….can you even taste the coffee?! : ) And if you live in Denton TX - it’s Uncommon Ground! They have live jazz…or they did when I lived there. It was FAB! Any coffee shop with no smoking and live jazz is the way to go! That’s my vote ; )

Jason - great talking to you yesterday man! I love that your passion for God and your family is almost equalled by your passion for coffee. Central Canada is all about Second Cup - they’re as thick on the ground here as Starbucks in Vancouver. If you can’t find a Second Cup, odds are pretty good there’s a Tim Horton’s close by. I take a cup of coffee to class - trying to guide first year’s to knowledge is an exasperating challenge - the coffee soothes my jangled nerves. That way I only throw chalk at them, and not sharp objects.

I admit my coffee house choices are mainstream these days. Kyle makes me jealous. The reality is I have yet to find a great coffeehouse that captures the true heart of a coffeehouse (in my mind) here in Charlotte. The ‘Smelly Cat’ in NODA comes close but it’s too far a drive for me and ‘community’ is a part of what makes a great coffeehouse great. So I settle for commercial coffee. So, if you know of any good coffee places in the area that have 1) free wireless (this should be law like free refills at restaurants!), 2) good coffee (organic and/or fair trade), and 3) atmosphere, let me know!

On another note TJ made me think about Minneapolis more and one of the great thngs about Mpls was the coffeehouses! They were about at prolific as churches are in the South. One on every corner.

Pandora’s was way too smokey for me! I couldn’t say it better than Shawnda!
Here are some favorites I can remember:
    1) Expresso Royale - in the heart of Dinkytown, my beloved home for my last year in Mpls
    2) Livinstones Cafe on Riverside- all organic, coffee and ice cream - and a random tanning salon in the back? Weird combo
    3) Common Grounds on Hennepin - nice for a romantic, dark, very dark and intimate time, too dark to study

    *Cough, cough* True Shawnda
    Pandora’s “was” coffee flavored
    cigarettes but now there’s that
smoking ban in the cities so maybe
    it has redeemed itself

We drink Millstone here at the Keller house…we get the megabags from BJs and keep it in the freezer. It’s the only decent balance I’ve found of (not too bad)price and (excellent)taste…

By far the BEST coffee house in the world is in Santa Cruz, CA. It is called Cafe Pergolesi and they serve everything in a most incredible atmosphere. Great place to hang out, either inside or outside, drinking coffee, soaking in the ambiance of the Pacific Garden Mall and the faint smell of the ocean surf!!! Runner up is the Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Company. They roast their own beans, direct from Peru, Costa Rica, etc. The Annex Mocha is divine!
